What happens to campaign contributions once a candidate drops out?

Take for example Ron Paul, what happens if he is not nominated by his party - but he still has a boatload of money (and say he remains true to his word that he won't run third party), what happens to all his extra loot? Does it go back to his political party? Please provide a source or fact, not your opinion. What happens to campaign contributions once a candidate drops out?
There is limited options to what you can do with leftover campaign cash.

1) You can keep it in a federal campaign account and use it to run for federal office later.

2) Give the money to another federal campaign. I.e. Ron Paul could donate the money ot somebody else running for federal office.

3) Give it to a party committee.

It cannot be pocketed for him personally. There was a time (Pre 1994 election) when that could be done but it now illegal. What happens to campaign contributions once a candidate drops out?
Ultimately it goes into his own pocket.
