Why are the presidential candidates excused from thier job in congress to campaign?

Why are they not doing thier job instead of campaigning? We have a great problem with a do-nothing government and they should be in congress making a difference. Let thier records as government officials do the talking for them rather than have them not do thier job while they try to win a popularity contest... ACTION NOT WORDS.Why are the presidential candidates excused from thier job in congress to campaign?
It's not the actual record that counts. It's the intent and promise.

Sheeeez. Don't you know anything? Why are the presidential candidates excused from thier job in congress to campaign?
You're right. We should vote for former Senators such as Fred Thompson. Or former mayors such as Rudy G.
Would you put the same conditions on a President running for re-election? Should the President be prevented from campaigning and let someone snatch the office away?

Provision is made for candidates to be briefed on the issues and cast their votes while campaigning.

Campaigning is an integral part of all congresspersons term in office.
Good question!
Every Presidential campaign we hear this same thing from people. And every Presidential campaign it is explained that they are not excused from their jobs. They return to the Hill for important votes and measures. There is a dedicated staff that keeps them up to date on everything happening in their absence and they still put forth bills and they still monitor their states.
Actually, technically, I don't believe that they are 'excused from their jobs'. They are still responsible to do their jobs. It's just that they usually DON'T do a very good job while they're campaigning, I would wager. Our presidents must come from somewhere - I wouldn't say that congress members shouldn't be allowed to run, but it is a tight line to walk to still do your job and to run for president too.
Interesting how they all say, I am working hard to... instead of I'm hardly working!
Technically they're not. They are suppose to be voting on bills, researching the issue, etc...
Great question, and I wish I had a good answer.
They aren't. No senator has won the presidency since 1960. They are punished at the polls for daring to run while still in office.

I dunno if the democrats can break that streak, but most senators running for office are wasting time.
