What happens to the millions of dollars in a campaign fund when a presidential candidate drops out?

John Edwards had a large surplus on hand when he dropped out. What happens to this money? What happens to the millions of dollars in a campaign fund when a presidential candidate drops out?
He doesn't have millions. He is ';suspending'; his campaign so he is legally eligible to continue to recieve matching federal funds. He claims he needs the matching 3 million (to match the 3 mil he raised in Jan already) to ';close up shop'; AKA pay everyone big bonuses, have a party and donate to whoemever he supports.

They spend every dime they can and whatevers left they keep in special funds or PAC's for future runs for office. What happens to the millions of dollars in a campaign fund when a presidential candidate drops out?
The fund goes to the party as a revolving fund when a candidate drops out.
Edwards is a politician, he has already spent it.
He goes on a long vacation with it.

Hey, thats what i would do!
